Discussion: “Is Francis a material heretic?”

November 9, 2023 (Steven O’Reilly) – Earlier today, I had a chance to visit with Tim Gordon on his “Rules for Retrogrades” podcast.  The topic of the discussion was “Is Francis a material heretic?”

We discussed the implications of the preface Pope Francis (see also article on OnePeterFive) wrote for Stephen Walford’s book, as well as the theological, philosophical, and doctrinal problems with Walford’s example of a hypothetical case of a Divorced & Remarried couple who could continue to have an adulterous, sexual relationship and still receive sacramental absolution, and receive communion.  Other articles on the topic of potential heresy I referenced on show include Dubium: ‘Are you a heretic, yes or no?’and What to Do in the Case of a Potentially Heretical Pope.

The broadcast can be viewed at Timothy Gordon’s “Rules for Retrogrades“.

Toward the end of today’s discussion, we also delved a little into the question of the validity of the 2013 conclave. My articles on this topic may be found in The Conclave Chronicles. Among these are the articles on the suspiciously timed pre-dawn police raid, on the morning of the conclave, which may have sunk Cardinal Scola’s chances in the conclave.  Scola had been considered the favorite going into the conclave.  The articles on Scola includeThe Forgotten ‘October Surprise’ of the 2013 Conclave and The Forgotten ‘October Surprise’ (Part II): Cui Bono?.The Conclave Chronicles also looks into the the question of the “Influential Italian Gentleman”, and his possible identity.

  1. Seven heresies of Francis

Charge Francis with the delict of heresy

The Hierarchy can depose Francis but they won’t

I suspect the Cardinals/Bishops won’t act because they know that even after they found him guilty of the delict of heresy he would not leave the office. They’d have to have him dragged out of
    Domus Sanctae Marthae

It is all about the optics for the prelates.

ALL of the Vatican Two era Popes failed in their most important duty:

And this is why we have Francis – because they failed in their duty and some think the Prelates will finally act?

    Color me unconvinced.

Who made Bergoglio a Bishop and a Cardinal ?

    1. VC…thanks for the links. I’ll take a look.

I do think an increasing number of them understand something must be done; but I think they are held back by the fact they are “too few.”

But the way the number and gravity of events in Rome are accelerating, I gotta believe they will finally conclude that they need to become bolder. I think we’re beginning to see this in Cardinal Muller as one example, and Cardinal Sarah joining in one of the recent round of Dubias.

      Silence is not an option.

      Thanks for the comments.

      God bless,

      1. I appreciate your work, your writing, your viewpoints, and they help me in a dark time. In a Catholic world full of Barnhardts, your work s important. I just wanted to thank you.

  2. In your comments you mention how more bishops are starting to come out against what Francis is attempting to do to the Church. It made me think of Our Lady of Akita’s warnings about bishop against bishop being a sign of near chastisement.

Also, I see the BiPers are really hitting the Bishop Strickland removal. Barnhardt in particular has a whole bunch of strawmen she creates.

    1. Steven,

thanks for the comment. Yes…I think the tempo of events is picking up. The dubia submitted by Burke and company, Fernandez responding to lots of dubia now (e.g., trans baptisms, etc), and now Muller speaking up on a whole bunch of things, etc.

My gut says…expect additional responses by Fernandez to other dubia which will necessarily cause more controversy, etc. So, yes…more cardinal vs. cardinal, bishop vs. bishop. I think it’s to the point where the ‘good cardinals’ really need to be much bolder than they have up to now shown themselves to be.

With regard to BiP aka Benepapism, I think they are drawing more from the letter Strickland read at the Lifesite forum than they should. Yes, the writer expressed Benepapist views, and in that regard it was remarkable Strickland read it…but Strickland seemed to walk back things during the lifesite interview on the day he was fired. He referenced Francis as the ‘supreme pontiff’ or words to that effect.

The more confusion there is, I think there is an all too human desire to find simple solutions – which on its face, Benepapism may appear to provide. Hence, Barnhardt and company seize on any new controversy to sow more confusion. But the Benepapist arguments don’t withstand scrutiny, and one risks falling into long term ‘neo sedevacantism’ as a logical consequence of its premise, e.g., many Benepapists have already said they will reject ANY conclave with Francis cardinals.

As I have always counseled. Wait and act with the Church. Something Barnhardt, Cionci, Mazza, Docherty, Acosta, et al are not willing to do. They have declared THEIR answer. THEIR solution. It is for the rest of us, i.e., the whole Church, to catch up to them. That is not the Catholic way. It will not end well for them if they stay on their present course. Pray for them.

      God bless,

      Steve
